Everybody Loves a Clown

Back

Initial Overview:

Child lets friendly-looking monster into house where it kills their parents, leaves the kid alive. Sam is afraid of clowns (freaks?)

Notes:

Sam cries over John's body. Dean doesn't know what to think. Lies to Sam, cuts himself off. Fixes the car. Sam tries to get him to talk about it, gets upset when he refuses-- "don't you want revenge?" Calls him patronizing in response to insult about his masculinity & refers to himself as "buried."

Ellen introduced alongside Jo.

Trans jokes in the "freaks are scary" episode: 2

They're weird about telling Ellen John is dead. Probably want to keep it to themselves.

Dean is classist to Ash (notes say: they're both transgender). Ash is "secretly" smart, which Dean also resents & takes consistently cheap shots at

Sam gravitates to case as a distraction, following what he learned. What John wanted, how Dean acted in the beginning of season 1. Dean reached the conclusion Sam is attempting to embody over 2 years ago & possesses information Sam does not, leading him to act in anger progressed from denial, while Sam is just beginning this same process of idolation via denial.

Carnival manager makes the boys instantly. Because they don't appear freakish, he tells them they should try to be normal. Sam rejects the idea of even attempting normalcy as outlandish, signifying his radical shift towards embracing his status as a freak (read: monster).

Dean questions Sam's newfound loyalty. Is dissatisfied with it because...

Sam goes in the funhouse and finds nothing but it's really cute

Dean is hounded by blind man (& monster in disguise) for a second time, misdirected to carnival owner

Save family from monster, are regarded as intruders or monsters themselves

Sam questions John's relationship with Ellen. Nags Dean about processing John's death. Dean questions his motivations for following John's wishes, says it's too late to make him happy.

Monster sleeps on a bed of filth, Sam gets caught looking while Dean finds truth on accident. They get separated while facing an active threat and do not like it.

Sam leaves so Dean can talk to Jo, but Dean's too sad to pick up women.

Ash makes a Pink Flamingos reference?

Sam apologizes to Dean, blames himself for John's death & accepts Dean was right about his projection. In response Dean beats the fuck out of the Impala (destroys what's left of John's memory)
