Something Wicked This Way Comes
Initial Overview:
Notes say I was drunk when I watched this episode.
A monster Dean failed to protect Sam from returns. Job given by John, Dean sees as opportunity to redeem himself. Monster is a sleeping sickness inducing creature that moves through families-- but only the children. Opener child has a sister already afflicted, left at home with her dad.
Notes:
Minor discourse in car about Dean's faith in John vs. Sam's lunar belief. Continuation of Sam believing (or Dean thinking Sam believes) Dean is childish & weak.
Interviews the father.
Flashback #1: Dean is 11 as John leaves him with Sam alone for days. "Shoot first ask questions later." Marine-level opsec. Dean knew about the supernatural well before Sam.
Sam can't believe John would leave a monster alive. Dean lies to him about the reason to preserve his & John's image.
Flashback #2: Sam gives Dean the toy from the last of the cereal, which Dean forgoes so that Sam can have it. He dumps the spaghetti-os in the trash instead of eating them which has been something that's bugged me for ten fucking years. Is he stupid? Is he 11? Does he have an eating disorder? Is it just bad writing? With Supernatural, nobody ever knows!!!
Witch steals the life force of children. Vulnerable when feeding. I'm just going to go ahead and say that it's a metaphor for hunting because what the hell, why not. Dean knows this and is vague about why. Sam is suspiscious.
Dean connects with kid (again) who has to look agter his brother. Kid blames himself for his brother getting sick. Tries to insist on going to see his brother in the hospital but Dean tells him to listen to his mother. Kid also calls SamDean gay. #clocked
Doctor supposed to care for kids is monster.
Dean wants to use the kid as bait (terrible father moment). Says John sent him here.
Flashback #3: Dean leaves Sam alone to play in the arcade. Monster attacks Sam. Dean is about to blow it away when John comes in and it escapes-- THIS has always been incredibly significant to me. Dean would have been able to kill it had John not arrived at that exact moment. John's arrival causes the monster to run away! --John says "I told you not to leave this room. I told you not to let him out of your sight!" Looked at Dean "different" after that.
Dean offers forgiveness to kid. Hints that the reason he is so opposed to telling people the truth (1.02, 1.08) is because he hates what the truth has done to the Family. Wishes he could have kept the secret from Sam for longer (3.08). Threatens death of future children to get kid to co-operate, doesn't work. Kid's reasoning is 100% based around his loyalty to his brother. Mother's orders are not mentioned. Using oneself for bait is sacrifice for family brother. "Are you sure you wanna do this? It's ok, I won't be mad. Crazy ass line from Dean.
Sam says he's sorry for giving Dean shit over following John's orders. Recognizes Dean is not 100% doing it for John-- he's doing it because he loves Sam! :) :) :)
Monster goes for Sam after throwing Dean aside.
Killing monster undoes sickness on kids-- and undoes Dean's sin.
Both regret having to be honest with kid. Sam begs for innocence. "Iwish you could too." Dean do you want ANYTHING except your brother??? Let's all kill ourselves
